Introduction to Biology

Introduction to Biology

An introductory course in the biological sciences. Biology is the study of living things and their vital processes that deals with all the physicochemical aspects of life.

Students will learn topics that include cell biology, anatomy and genetics, specifically physiology, stem cells, bioinformatics, neuroscience and DNA.

Material will be delivered via, text, multi-media and workbooks. Quizzes will be given for each section and a full course test will be given at the end.

Section 1
Cell Biology

Carrie Section 1

  • 1.
    Scientific Method
    40:00
Learn various experiments that often serve as introductory concepts. Learn to observe, gather data, design experiments, and analyze charts and graphs. Also includes simple experiments to demonstrate the concepts.
  • 2.
    Introduction to Physiology
    35:00
In this course, students learn to recognize and to apply the basic concepts that govern integrated body function (as an intact organism) in the body's nine organ systems.
  • 3.
    The Science of Stem Cells
    2:03:00
In this five-part online course you will explore the history and basic biology of stem cells, learn about new research techniques, and find out how stem cells could lead to cures for diseases and to individualized medicine
  • 4.
    Bioinformatics
    3:00:00
Upon completion of the course, students should be more comfortable working with the vast amounts of biomedical and genomic data and online tools that will be relevant to their work in the coming decades.
  • 5.
    Cell Biology Section Quiz
    30:00
Test your knowledge about cell biology discussed in the previous lessons.
Section 2
Anatomy

Section 2

  • 6.
    Medical Neuroscience
This course emphasizes the neural and vascular anatomy of the human brain and spinal cord, providing an anatomical framework for localizing lesions within the central nervous system
  • 7.
    Anatomy of the Abdomen
In this anatomy course you will explore the organs involved in our food digestion and discover the common causes of abdominal and pelvic pain.
  • 8.
    The Basics of Trauma Surgery
This course imparts a wide range of basic knowledge and skills in the field of trauma surgical and orthopedic treatment of patients.
  • 9.
    Proximal Lower Extremity
This is a new lesson that was added after a session was started. I want to see if it is available to the user.
Section 3
Genetics

Section 3

  • 10.
    Genomic Data Science
Using open-source software, including R and Bioconductor, you will acquire skills to analyze and interpret genomic data.
  • 11.
    DNA Encoded
You'll learn about the practical techniques that scientists use to analyze our genetic risks, to manipulate DNA, and to develop new treatments for a range of different diseases.
